Plant bulbs now for spectacular spring color!
With the days getting shorter and temps dropping, we all know what’s coming – winter!
For those of you who love the snow, cold, and misery of the season – more power to you. The rest of us would be happy to have it pass quickly and get on to the blooming season. Planting spring bulbs now is a way to say, “Take that!” to winter.
Here’s a beginner-friendly guide to planting bulbs to give you a spring burst of color.

Choosing the right bulbs
When selecting bulbs for your garden, consider the varieties that thrive in our northern Illinois climate and soil. Here are some picks that are easy to grow and produce spectacular colors:
- Tulips – Among the most beloved spring flower, tulips come in a rainbow of colors. Try varieties like ‘Queen of Night’ (a striking deep purple) and ‘Angelique’ (a soft, blush pink) for variety
- Daffodils – Known for their resilience and bright, cheerful blooms, daffodils are a must-have. ‘Golden Ducat’ offers gorgeous double flowers in brilliant yellow, while ‘Mount Hood’ boasts pristine white petals.
- Hyacinths – Their dense florets add color and scent to your spring garden. The ‘Blue Jacket’ features deep blue blooms, and ‘Pink Pearl’ provides a splash of soft pink.
- Crocuses – One of the first signs of spring, crocuses are ideal for creating a colorful tapestry. The large-flowered ‘Remembrance’ with its rich purple hue is popular.
- Alliums – For a dramatic flair, alliums offer globe-shaped flowers atop tall stalks. ‘Globemaster’ and ‘Purple Sensation’ have large, striking blooms in vibrant purple shades.
Tips and tricks for planting
- Timing is key: Aim to plant your bulbs from late September to mid-November in northern Illinois. This timing allows the bulbs to establish roots before the ground freezes.
- Choosing the spot: Most bulbs prefer a sunny spot with well-draining soil. Avoid areas where water collects, as this can cause the bulbs to rot.
- Planting depth and spacing: A general rule is to plant bulbs at a depth three times their height and space them about twice their width apart. This prevents overcrowding and ensures each bulb has enough room to grow.
- Feeding your bulbs: Apply a balanced slow-release bulb fertilizer at planting time to give your bulbs a nutrient boost. This helps promote strong root development over the winter.
- Mulching: After planting, apply a layer of mulch to keep the soil moist and protect the bulbs from sudden temperature changes during the winter.
- Watering: Give your newly planted bulbs a good watering to settle the soil around them. After this initial watering, there’s only a need to water continuously if you experience an unusually dry autumn.
Looking Ahead
Yes, you’ll have to wait months for the work to pay off – but your patience will prevail with bursts of color, fabulous scents, and victory over Old Man Winter!
